Qualifications: The right candidate for this position must demonstrate a high level of personal accountability and a commitment to excellence. The individual must be able to work independently without extensive supervision and have excellent oral and written communication skills. The Associate Scientist provides general expertise on environmental issues and provides guidance on natural resource and water management matters and practices . The successful candidate must have at least three years of experience working on issues requiring oversight of federal and state natural resource regulatory matters. The Associate Scientist must be able to provide interpretative analyses of laws and policies as they relate to Company operations. The Associate Scientist must also be able to determine the applicability of any local ordinances pertaining to these subject matters. The Associate Scientist must understand the regulatory process and support the Sr. Scientist in monitoring the impacts of regulatory changes on company operations. This person must have the skills to represent the company in regard to any relevant rulemaking procedures or proposed legislation, including working with internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate must be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with minimal oversight. The Associate Scientist is responsible for overseeing those aspects of company activities involving natural resources and water management including assessing current compliance practices, facilitating appropriate changes to these practices and assisting the field with all related inquiries. The Associate Scientist will be responsible for assisting with training in these areas and with developing and implementing training related procedures and guidance. The successful candidate will be responsible for communicating with regulators as needed. The Associate Scientist will provide hands-on assistance to the operating groups. To be considered for this position, you must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Environmental Management or a related field. You also must have three years of professional experience working with environmental programs including experience with oversight of wetlands and wildlife regulatory matters. In addition, experience with or demonstrated ability to oversee vegetation management and water management programs including spill prevention, control and countermeasure is preferred. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Candidate must have a valid driver's license to travel to various company locations. Position may require working outdoors in all types of weather conditions when necessary.

Responsibilities: Provide general expertise and guidance on natural resource management to EH&S staff and operating organizations. Coordinate, oversee and assist Sr. Scientist in monitoring technical and regulatory efforts, concerns, issues, questions, and activities associated with compliance with these subject areas. Take the lead in developing a program to improve the ability of field personnel to address these areas independently of most corporate EH&S assistance. Assist operating departments in developing cost-effective and compliant strategies for managing natural resource management practices. Act as liaison between EH&S and operating organizations, and assist Sr. Scientist in interfacing with government agencies on these subject matter areas. Evaluate proposed changes to regulations and laws governing natural resources and coordinate company involvement and advocacy strategies. Prepare or oversee preparation of compliance related reports in these areas for internal and external use. Provide expert support to Con Edison’s natural resources management training programs. Teach Corporate Environmental Procedures and training classes relating to these subject areas. When appropriate, correspond with regulatory agencies regarding environmental incidents. Participate in EH&S Emergency Resource Mobilization during emergencies.
