Qualifications: The Equipment and Field Engineering Department of Central Engineering is seeking to hire a highly motivated and dedicated professionals to join its Substation Equipment Engineering Section. The candidates must be well organized, detail oriented, and able to render sound technical decisions. These individuals must have a high regard for personal accountability and understand the critical importance of the department’s commitment to technical, environmental, and safety excellence. Preference will be given to candidates with a specialization in electrical or power systems. Expertise in and experience with the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance is required for the Engineer and Senior Engineer titles. Associate Engineer (1H): Candidates must have 2 years work experience to include 1 year of applicable Engineering work experience. Engineer (2L): Candidates must have at least 3 years of applicable work experience as well as moderate experience in the application, specification, engineering, operation, installation, and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems. Senior Engineer (2H): Candidates must have at least 8 years of engineering experience in the design, engineering, application, and troubleshooting of major substation electrical equipment, e.g., power transformers, high-voltage (HV) circuit breakers, medium-voltage (MV) switchgear. Candidates must have working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with the equipment. Candidates are also required to work independently, initiate areas of investigation, and drive projects/programs independently to achieve results. Professional Engineering (PE) license and/or Master’s degree is preferred.


The positions require working in and around substations that are under construction and/or in service. The positions involve working around electrical equipment, working indoors and outdoors, and ladder climbing. Must be able to wear the requisite PPE. A driver's license is required for travel within service territory. Candidates must be available to work additional hours, as needed, for system emergencies or equipment outage schedules.


Responsibilities: Selected candidates will be responsible for providing the R&D, application, design engineering, specification preparation, purchase, construction and maintenance support for major substation electrical equipment (HV and MV circuit breakers, power transformers, MV switchgear, capacitor banks, gas-insulated substations (GIS), instrument transformers, dc systems, test sets, etc.). This includes preparation of electrical equipment specifications, technical analysis of bid proposals, review of all manufacturers’ designs and drawings, factory and field inspection, and furnishing of technical expertise to the Construction and Operating Departments. In addition, they will provide technical guidance and resolve problems during substation equipment installation, maintenance, and repair or replacement of equipment. For problems related to equipment installation, failures, and equipment maintenance, candidates will provide field support by responding to system and equipment problems; will perform root-cause failure analysis to determine the cause of the failure or problem, whether the failure or problem is due to engineering, design, or manufacturing deficiencies or due to system or operational conditions; and will make determinations about equipment failure trending. The successful candidates will issue test procedures and determine whether problematic equipment should be repaired or replaced. Candidates will respond to technical questions in a timely manner and monitor and evaluate operation and maintenance for reliability, safety, and efficiency. Candidates will coordinate support from other Central Engineering groups in responding to emergencies and to service and maintenance problems.

ASSOCIATE ENGINEER (1H): Candidate must have at least 2 years of work experience, with a minimum of 1 year of applicable engineering experience.

Senior Engineer (2H): Must have minimum 8 years experience in the design, engineering, application of power plants and commercial analysis or operation of power systems, and medium voltage substation.

Qualifications: Steam Equipment Engineering is looking to hire a highly motivated and dedicated professional to join its management team as an Electrical Equipment Engineer.
A Bachelors Degree in Engineering is required. A thorough understanding of plant electric system design, construction, operations, maintenance, testing or analysis in the utility industry, oil & gas industry or marine propulsion is required. Experience with transformers (up to 120,000kVA), switchgear, breakers and power cables (up to 69kV), generators (up to 230,000kVA), motors, MCC’s, power panels, buss-work, or electric transmission is required. A working knowledge of equipment sizing and analysis calculations, life cycle management, protection schemes, UPS, and dielectric fluids is required. Knowledge of State and Federal regulations affecting electric operations is required. Knowledge of industry standards and process safety measures is required. Either the possession of or ability to obtain an in-depth knowledge of Company and Industry codes, standards, procedures and specifications is required.

Position requires a valid driver’s license. Must be able to travel to various Company work locations within the five boroughs. Travel is also required to attend various meetings at non-Company locations. Must be able to visit field sites in all types of weather and be willing to work in a plant environment. Must wear appropriate attire and PPE for the work location and duties. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Responsibilities: Perform System Condition Assessments to identify and document system or component deficiencies. Generate and drive corrective actions. Use plant and industry standard software and analysis tools to initiate performance and availability improvement plans. Participate in project planning and construction (scope review, design basis requirements, walk-downs, code and procedure compliance, acceptance testing, etc.). Planning and support of major component overhauls and system outages. Root cause analysis of forced outages and component failures.
Interface with and track activities of equipment and service providers, both inside and outside the Company. Documenting and driving correction of unplanned design basis changes. Generate or review acceptance test plans, and oversee or observe testing.
Review and maintain System Descriptions, One-lines and other design basis documentation. Generate detailed reports and presentations to inform and guide Central Engineering capital planning and all levels of management. Provide engineering support to Station management. Represent the Section or Company on committees working on various issues. Establish and maintain effective lines of communication among various internal and external organizations.


The candidate is required to provide technical and shift support during system emergencies.

Coordinate engineering evaluations and obtain concurrence of: proposed locations for future substations, expansions capability, and order of magnitude cost analyses, from the Advanced Planning Project Team. Work with Transmission Planning to perform feasibility studies for generation and transmission interconnection agreements, and on the NYISO interconnection requests and Class Year projects. Perform feasibility studies for new substation capital work including installing new switchgear, transformers, and feeder positions. Assist with development of the rolling Five Year Capital Budget as needed. Transition selected preliminary substations expansion and/or interconnection plans to relevant project implementation organization(s) as required.

Junior Designer will design, draw, interpret electric conduits and all aspects of mechanical, civil, structural and steam installations, and apply appropriate work code per company and governmental standards, specifications and requirements. Candidate will perform field walks to gather/verify existing facilities, subsurface interference, steam piping, and metering equipment information, and prepare drawings for upgrading of the current design; conduct engineering studies and computerized analysis of steam piping network to assure system integrity and perform calculations to design metering devices. Candidate will also interpret technical data and apply to steam piping and metering applications. Junior Designer will review as built drawings of steam mains and associated steam structures and use the information to update the current mapping system. Candidate will also query the Steam Operations Mapping Information System (SOMIS) for information on steam mains, services, structures and components. Junior Designer must be able to prepare written communications and perform other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned as required.


Physical Requirements: Selected applicant must be able to perform extensive walking and climbing in all weather conditions. The working environment will consist of office, confined spaces, and steam meter room where the ambient temperature and humidity is abnormally high. Requires a valid drivers license. Must be able to travel to field locations and wear the appropriate PPE as required.

Responsibilities: Prepares conceptual, authorization and appropriation cost estimates for multidiscipline construction projects. Must be able to develop estimates based on preliminary work scopes, drawings and sketches, while relying on personal experiences and or historical data to fill in missing information. Should have an understanding of the capital budget process and utility economics in the preparation of authorization and appropriation estimates used to obtain project funding approvals. Should be able to contribute to the development of project work scopes during estimate preparation to ensure project constructability and lower costs. Must be able to evaluate alternative designs and contribute to the optimum design selection. Meets with engineering, construction and the user organizations to ensure all aspects of the project have been incorporated in the estimate.

Must possess strong oral and written communication skills. Strong leadership skills including experience in direct supervision, and the ability to positively manage and motivate others is required. Additionally, candidate must be available for emergency work 24/7 as required by system conditions. A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required. A thorough understanding of utility/industrial boiler design, operations, maintenance, testing or analysis, and safety procedures is required. Experience with conventional utility boilers, HRSGs, and package boilers, efficiency testing, heat rate and performance analysis, combustion tuning, inspections, tube repairs and installations, hydrostatic testing, power plant chemistry and chemical cleaning processes, Distributed Control Systems, Burner Management Systems, and co-generation operating cycles is required.


SENIOR ENGINEER (2H): Requires 8 years of applicable engineering work experience including engineering projects, planning, and utility system design. PE license preferred.
ENGINEER (2L): Requires 3 years of applicable engineering work experience including engineering projects, planning, and utility system design.
ASSOCIATE ENGINEER (1H): Requires 2 years of work experience to include 1year of applicable engineering work and participation in projects, planning and system design.

MS degree preferred. A working knowledge of auxiliary systems and associated equipment such as fuel delivery systems, high energy piping systems, steam turbines, and generators is preferred. In addition a working knowledge of inspection, repair, and environmental processes such as Non Destructive Testing, welding techniques, including inspections and emissions control is also preferred. Knowledge of State and Federal regulations affecting steam plant operations is preferred. Knowledge of industry codes and standards (i.e. ASME Boiler / Pressure Vessel code and B31.1, NBIC, NFPA 85, etc.) and process safety measures is preferred.


Position requires a valid driver’s license. Must be able to travel to various Company work locations within the five boroughs. Travel is also required to attend various meetings at non-Company locations. Must be able to visit field sites in all types of weather and be willing to work in a plant environment. Must wear appropriate attire and PPE for the work location and duties. Must be able to lift 50lbs, work at heights, and work within confined spaces.

Responsibilities: Will perform System Condition Assessments to identify and document system or component deficiencies, review equipment operation, and generate and drive corrective actions. Will review and maintain System Descriptions, P&ID’s, and other design basis documentation. Will perform root cause analysis of component failures and forced outages. Will provide engineering support to Station. Will participate in project planning, outages, and construction processes. Will generate or review acceptance test plans, and oversee or observe testing/commissioning. Will interface with and track activities of equipment and service providers, both inside and outside the Company. Will generate detailed reports and presentations to inform and guide Central Engineering capital planning and all levels of management. Will establish and maintain effective lines of communication among various internal and external organizations.
