Qualifications: The Law Department is seeking a highly motivated candidate who demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence and understands the vital importance of personal accountability. The successful candidate must be able to exercise independent judgment and possess the ability to render sound legal and business decisions. Must be well organized, detail oriented, flexible to handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines in a demanding high volume environment. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have the ability to effectively interact with judges, court personnel, customers, employees in other departments, outside agencies, and various levels of management. Must have excellent writing and negotiating skills and the ability to analyze, evaluate, and advocate. A Juris Doctor Degree with a minimum of four years’ work experience in personal injury, property damage, civil litigation, or a utility company is required.



Two years of knowledge/experience with utility operations preferred. Knowledge of insurance coverage issues preferred. Integrity and strong interpersonal skills and excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills are required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.

Responsibilities: The Staff Attorney will be an integral part of the General Litigation Department’s early resolution team. The successful candidate will appear at pre-trial hearings to conference matters with the court and opposing counsel; appear in court or at private mediation sessions to assist with the disposition of suits brought against the Company by negotiating appropriate settlement agreements with the approval of the Associate General Counsel; aid in the scheduling and adjourning of trials or other scheduled matters in the best interests of the company; prepare and discuss conference summaries; draft and argue motions to dismiss, discovery motions, and other dispositive motions, under supervision; review medical reports and hospital records, and assist with the evaluation of alleged injuries and preparation of medical testimony for trial; assist attorneys and investigators with trial strategy, the preparation of witnesses, and acquisition of documents. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented with the ability to manage and track multiple cases at one time using legal management software. Perform other assignments as required.

Physical Requirements: Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed. Must be able to participate in the Company’s emergency management processes and storm plans as required.
