Qualifications: The Law Department’s Mass Torts & Workers Compensation Group is seeking an attorney with expertise in workers’ compensation and related employment matters. The position requires a J.D. Degree from an accredited Law School. Applicants must be an attorney, in good standing and admitted to practice law in New York State. Applicants for the Staff Attorney position must have three years of experience in handling NY State workers’ compensation legal and administrative issues before the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board. Applicants for the Sr. Staff Attorney must have six years of the above referenced experience. Must possess excellent presentation, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.




Responsibilities: Will ensure implementation of Company safety, health and environmental programs for employees whose work is directed. Ensure that safe work practices are followed and the environment is fully protected in accordance with Company policy and governmental regulations. Will have a Commitment to the Way We Work Principles, and adhere to the Company’s Standards of Business Conduct and other Company procedures including Environmental, Health and Safety (“EH&S”), Equal Employment Opportunity (“EEO”), discipline, and security. At Con Edison we all need to take special interest in our customers, both within the company and externally. As an employee, you need to commit to these ideals of developing a proactive, customer-centric culture to foster trust and confidence among customers and improve value for all our stakeholders. The candidate will represent the Company in litigation of workers' compensation matters before various state courts and administrative agencies. Provide legal counsel and training on all workers’ compensation matters to in-house clients, outside counsel and the company’s third-party administrator. Provide oversight of the Company’s third-party administrator and outside counsel. Draft appeals, briefs, and legal memoranda on complex high-exposure claims and/or review and edit the work of outside counsel. Review and respond to requests for third party settlements. Sr. Attorney applicants should be proficient in calculating Kelly and Burns liens and offsets. Prepare cases for claim reviews with third-party administrator and client organizations. Identify and prepare Company witnesses for testimony at administrative hearings. Ensure compliance with New York State Workers’ Compensation laws and regulations, including self-insurance requirements. Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.



Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able and willing to travel as needed. Must be able to participate in the Company’s emergency management processes and storm plans as required.
